How Does it Work?
To get my personalized formulas I first filled out a quick and fun hair care survey. The survey asked about my hair type and my hair goals. My hair is brown and wavy. It has a medium thickness, it’s long and oily-dry. I also have a tight scalp. My hair goals are thermal protection, color protection, and oil control. I’d also love more volume and to reduce frizz.
Based on my answers, I was given my results and what would be in my own personalized shampoo and conditioner. I was happy to see that ALL formulas, not just mine, are sulfate free, paraben free, and animal cruelty-free. I love that this is an animal-friendly company and that these shampoos and conditioners are safe to use on colored hair.
What to Expect When Trying Your New Personalized Shampoo and Conditioner
Using these gentle formulas is a little bit different. Before using your formulation, give your shampoo and conditioner a good shake to mix all of those fabulous ingredients together. The first time I used my Formulate shampoo and conditioner, my hair felt a bit oily the next day. After reaching out to the Formulate team, I was assured that this was very common.
We’re all so used to using hair care products with sulfates in them. Sulfates strip your scalp of oil, causing it to counteract this loss of oil by overproducing it. The Formulate chemist advises that it may take 6 uses then 1 or 2 weeks for the oil production in your scalp to adjust to this gentler formula.
As my hair adjusted, I made sure to really work the shampoo into my scalp for several minutes before rinsing it out. I’ve found that shampooing twice is also helpful when beginning to use Formulate products. I’ve only been applying the conditioner to the middle section of my hair down to my ends, avoiding my scalp completely. This greatly helped lessen the oiliness of my hair as my scalp adjusted to this beneficial new formula.
Another major difference you’ll notice when using your Formulate shampoo for the first time is that it doesn’t create a thick lather. This is true for almost all sulfate-free shampoos. I’m sure in your mind, like mine, you think lather = clean. That’s not the case, the lather is unnecessary and has nothing to do with cleanliness. I found that as long as I worked the formula into my scalp and throughout my hair, I ended up with clean hair that felt softer and looked shinier than ever. The softness really took me by surprise the first time I used my Formulate shampoo and conditioner.
