The Best Mom’s Day Out Ideas for Early Summer

The beautiful Bay Area of California is home to some of the best sights, dining, events, and attractions in the country. The area offers gorgeous architecture, lots of history, and plenty of things to see and do. Here are some ideas that will be of particular interest when planning a mom’s day and night out in the area. 

Fun Venues

Pier 39 is ranked on the most visited attractions on the historic waterfront in San Francisco. Located on Beach Street & The Embarcadero Parking area, this venue has a wide range of shopping and dining experiences, as well as great programing with live events and entertainment. There are even deals on nail salons in the area to get those fingertips looking good.

Located along the The Embarcadero, the Ferry Building is another popular destination in the city. Great shopping, local artisans, and restaurants are all housed in this historic building. Stroll along the waterfront with a cup of Blue Bottle Coffee or ice cream from Humphrey Slocomb, followed by dining at the famous Hog Island Oyster Company or the Slanted Door.

Enjoy a drive or walk over the historic Golden Gate Bridge and take in this expansive structure and gorgeous views.

Bay Area Brew Tour is a fun alternative if you are ready to try something different. Reserve a tasting and enjoy flights of local brews while learning about food pairings and meeting brewmasters. 


There are a plethora of shopping options in the Bay Area. One of the largest and most compelling shopping areas is Union Square. This pedestrian-friendly area boasts historic architecture, high-end boutiques and department stores.

Haunted SF:  Ghosts, Murder and Mystery is a fun way to learn about San Francisco’s history while walking through the city. This 90-minute experience takes place after dark when the ghosts are sure to be out. 

The Japanese Tea Garden is a lovely, authentic Japanese garden located inside Golden Gate Park. It is the oldest public Japanese garden in the US and home to beautiful plants and delicious tea —  the perfect setting for a tranquil afternoon. 

Upcoming Family Activities

Celebrating Elephants Day at the Oakland Zoo is a great, annual event were visitors learn everything about elephants and get to tour the elephant barn and meet the elephants. Barn tours run every hour beginning at 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.

San Francisco Youth Ballet Classical and Contemporary Gala on May 26 will feature the San Francisco Youth Ballet, local professional dancers and guests for this evening of dance. The program will consist of a contemporary ballet set to Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” and “Raymonda, Act III.” This event is perfect for younger audiences as well as fans of ballet. 

Duke Ellington For Kids! is a family matinee with the Marcus Shelby Orchestra that will showcase the music of the well-celebrated Duke Ellington. An interactive family workshop will follow the performance and is free to ticket holders.
