First, let’s cover some basic facts about this lipstick collection. The Kiss Me Karl Lip Lights Lipsticks are available in 3 finishes: matte, gloss, and top coat. I purchased one shade in each finish. Overall, the collection offers a range of neutral colors from beige nudes to pale pinks.
The consistency of each finish is slightly different, the matte shade has the thinnest and lightest feel. The gloss is a bit thicker and heavier. The top coat is the thickest and heaviest. Even with the heavier feeling of the gloss and top coat, both are still very light compared to other glosses and top coats that I’ve tried. None of the 3 finishes feel sticky.
The matte shade needs to be layered to achieve a full covering of your lips. I purchased the shade, Rue Lagerfeld. Out of the tube, the tone is much brighter than it initially appears. This shade is a beautiful spring/summer shade that would be stunning while on vacation in a sunny spot.
The gloss adds color to your lips but is slightly sheer. It looks the same inside and outside of the tube. I purchased the gloss in St. Tropez Sunset. I think it’d be a great gloss to stash in your bag and wear whenever you’d like to add subtle color to your look.
The top coat is my favorite, I purchased Eiffel Tower Glitter. It has a bronze/brown shimmering base with specks of silver glitter. It’s multi-functional and can be worn over any color of your choosing or on its own. I’ve been opting to wear it solo whenever I want a touch of color and shine. It compliments natural, bare-faced makeup looks really well.
This is what made me interested in these lipsticks in the first place. Without the gimmicky, eye-catching packaging I probably wouldn’t have given them a second look. I’ll say it time and time again, I’m a sucker for interesting packaging. Sometimes that’s a good thing, other times, not so much. In this case, it’s a little bit of both.
Each lipstick boasts its own Karl Lagerfeld inspired bust, complete with thick-rimmed glasses, a collared shirt and tie, and ponytail. The color of Karl depends on which finish you’re getting. The matte black Karl contains the mattes, the shiny silver Karl contains the glosses, and the shiny pink Karl contains the top coats.
The adorable mini Karl’s may be enough to draw you in, but unscrewing the lipsticks is where the real fun begins. Remember how I mentioned these lipsticks lighting up your life? I was being literal, they light up! After one or two spins of the bust, a light begins to shine down the lipstick applicator. With a mirror included on the back of the tube, you can apply or freshen up these lipsticks anywhere, anytime. Low-light or no-light, Karl’s got you covered. Use the light on the applicator and the mirror on the tube to keep your lips looking forever flawless.
Swatch, Try On, Pros and Cons
PROS:Â The gloss and top coat swatch and wear beautifully. The gloss, top coat, and matte feel light on your lips and are not at all sticky.
CONS:Â The matte doesn’t apply evenly. After applying two layers and allowing them to dry, it still looked uneven and a bit streaky. The dry time of the matte was quite long too and even after completely drying it did not look completely matte.
Originally $28.00 per lipstick, these are now on sale for $4.97! That’s an incredible markdown. Even at the low price, I’d save your $5 and skip the matte. The gloss and top coat, on the other hand, are a steal at that price.
