That Blur Between Christmas and the New Year

Happy New Year’s Eve! I hope everyone had a safe and spectacular time celebrating the holidays! Now we’re in that weird in-between time where one holiday is over, but another is right around the corner. Here’s a look at how I’ve been spending the past week, what have you been up to? Please let me know in the comments below! Keep scrolling, you’ll find them!

xmas morning presents

First of all, we have been home all week! We were traveling for most of December so this was a very welcome change. On Christmas Eve we did our last minute holiday prepping and celebrated together as a little family. Last minute prep included my husband setting up our new record player, we’re so hipster, and him running to the store 3 separate times to pick up items that had been forgotten. On the celebration side of things, I cooked most of the day prepping lasagna for Christmas Day and a roast chicken for that night. We listened to music, spent time together, played games, and even let our little one open a few gifts. It was low-key and delightful!

On Christmas Morning, we got ourselves together then went to get our little one. She is so good about staying in her room until we go to get her and sleeping in, it’s amazing. We told her it was Christmas Day and she began head-banging and shaking her booty. Booty-shaking is a regular thing for her, but head-banging is new. Downstairs, looking at the pile of Wooden Stamp Set – Deluxe Happy Handles” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>presents in front of her, I think she was a bit overwhelmed. The head-banging and booty-shaking stopped. Instead, she stood still with a look of wonderment on her face.

xmas tree and morning

Santa left a Pixar Cars 3 themed slot car race track unwrapped in front of the gifts and that was enough for her. She set eyes on that and did not want to open anything else, she just wanted to play! I don’t blame her, but there was some pretty cool stuff wrapped up behind that track. Slowly, we were able to coax her into opening the remainder of her gifts. Throughout the morning and early afternoon, she played with EVERYTHING we got her. Christmas morning was a huge success!

Family Presents

Our families came to the house later in the day and we opened more presents, had dinner together, and then opened even more presents. There were so many, we had to save some for the following day. There were just too many great things to play with! The big hits of the evening were a Paw Patrol Ultimate Rescue Fire Truck, Barbie and her awesome new wardrobe, and Hungry Hungry Hippos.

The next day we stayed in and played ALL day! We basically had a repeat of Christmas Day, Deluxe Wooden Standing Art Easel” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>play, eat, play, eat. It was great, but by Thursday we needed to get out of the house. After a leisurely morning, we headed out to see Ralph Breaks the Internet. It was cute with plenty of parts that made the little ones and adults watching laugh.

{SPOILERS COMING – SKIP TO THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE}
SPOILERS: My major complaints were that it was long for a kids movie and that the Ralph monster/virus thing at the end made of 100s of Ralphs was creepy AF. Our little one is pretty brave and didn’t cry, but she did close her eyes the entire time it was on screen. I don’t blame her, I was creeped out. When we returned home, we relaxed and watched some cute, happy puppy cartoons! : SPOILERS OVER

On Friday, we enjoyed brunch at one our favorite brunch spots in Noe Valley, then did more relaxing. Not exciting, but well-deserved and fabulous. My husband and I then had a date night at one of our favorites: Alamo Drafthouse. If you haven’t seen a movie there yet and you’re in the Bay Area, go ASAP! This movie theater is the best. They offer reserved seating and servers that bring drinks and snacks right to your seat. We chose to see Aquaman and it was really entertaining. It had very cheesy parts, but they really leaned into the cheese making even these could-be-cringe-worthy scenes amusing. If you like superhero movies, I’d recommend it. Actually, even if you don’t I’d recommend it, I mean, it stars Jason Mamoa… enough said.

Lantern Light Festival Chinese Lanterns

For the remainder of the weekend, we became more and more active, venturing out of the house to play at Golden Gate Park, see the Lantern Light Festival, and go ice skating. My brother’s family got my little one an adorable pink bike that has a detachable steering assist handle. This handle is making the experience of teaching her to ride a bike less frustrating for us and her. I’ll go into detail about the Lantern Light Festival in a future post, but for now, I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that it was spectacular.

Carosel at Yerba Buena Gardens

We did our ice skating indoors at Yerba Buena Gardens. The rink here offers skating year-round and has a toddler section for little ones still getting their bearings. For seasoned skaters, a section in the middle of the ice is marked with cones for figure skating. Yerba Buena Gardens has so much to offer, after skating we played in the playgrounds, rode the carousel, and had lunch (see the pic below). Overall, we had a fantastic week!
