Summer Essentials – Beach

1.) SPF

Yes, yes, part of the reason for laying out on the beach is to get some sun, which is fine, as long as you’re sunbathing with some SPF. The sun is, unfortunately, your skin’s worst enemy, so protecting your skin from the sun is a must.

2.) Appropriate Accessories

In addition to SPF, I’d recommend wearing a large floppy hat and a spectacular pair of sunglasses. Large hats and sunglasses give you further protection from the sun and they give you a chance to show off your style. I’m a huge fan of solid colored straw hats and Ray-Ban Wayfarers. I got my first pair of classic Wayfarers several years ago and have been rocking them ever since.

3.) Shade

As good as the sun can feel on your skin, having the option to take a break and get out of the direct sunlight is much needed, especially if you have little ones in tow. I spend the majority of my time on the beach with my upper half shaded by an umbrella, leaving only my legs fully exposed to the sun.

4.) A Place to Keep Things Cool

Water is very important when hanging out by the, well, water. Some snacks and additional drink options (refreshing Hefeweizen anyone?) need a cool and sand-free place to stay. Packing some lunch is also a good plan. Having a picnic to eat while on the beach is a great way to save some cash. If food is available at the beach you’re heading to, it’s most likely not very good, unhealthy, and over-priced, bringing your own favorites is the way to go.

5.) Somewhere to Store the Rest of Your Stuff

Everything else that you bring will be much easier to carry if contained. A large, and adorable, beach bag will do the trick. I personally prefer beach bags that zip to keep as much sand on the beach and out of my bag as possible.

6.) Entertainment

People watching and zoning out while looking at the water are amusing and blissful things to do, but you and any little ones that tag along may want a little more stimulation. For little ones, nothing can entertain at the beach like a bucket and some shovels. For you, and older children, don’t forget to bring some magazines, books, and music. BTW, I’m sure you have amazing taste in music, but not everyone is going to want to listen to the same things that you do. Please bring and use some headphones when listening to tunes on a crowded beach. Your fellow beach lovers will thank you.

7.) Extra Charge

The magazines, books, and music you prefer are probably all in one place, on your phone or tablet. To ensure your battery doesn’t die, bring a backup charger that you can plug your electronics into when you need some extra juice.

8.) Beach Blankets/Towels

To separate yourself from the sand, bring a big comfy beach blanket or two to sit on. If you plan on taking a dip in the closest ocean, lake, or river, you’ll want some towels handy to dry yourself off when you’re done. Towels will also help you wipe sand off of your feet when it’s time to pack everything in and head home.

Summer Essentials – What to Wear

9.) Appropriate Apparel

While jeans and a t-shirt may be your go-to on a daily basis when it comes to sun and sand a bathing suit and beach cover-up are key! I’ve seen people in jeans on the beach, I’m serious. I can’t imagine how uncomfortable those people wearing jeans must have been, besides being hot, can you imagine getting sand in your jeans!? NO, thank you. A bathing suit allows seamless transitioning from the sand to the water and a cover-up provides comfort and even more sun protection when you need it.

10.) Sandals

They have the word “sand” in them. I’m sure sandals are already a staple in your summer wardrobe and there is no better place for them to be worn than on the beach. While I tend to wear your average pair of flip-flops to the beach, sandals that won’t kick-up sand at you are probably a better option.

11.) Wet Bag

If you go swimming, you’re going to need a place to put all of your wet stuff when you’re done. Cue wet bags, you can use something as simple as a Ziploc baggie to store your wet bathing suit, but if you’d like something more fun there are plenty of options online.

12.) Extra Clothes

After storing your wet items in your wet bag, things may get a little awkward if you don’t have a dry pair of clothes to change into. Unless, of course, you’re spending the day on the Northern half of Baker Beach, one of San Francisco’s unofficial nude beaches. The closer you get to the bridge, the more likely you are to see birthday suits. Anyway, another bathing suit and cover-up will work if you’re going to be hanging out at the beach a bit longer. If you’re heading home or anywhere else after changing into your dry duds, go with something light, airy, and comfortable.
